I think everyone was shocked by ISIS. No one was ready or prepared for it. They’ve moved so swiftly it’s surprised all Westerner’s. Including our government. Tens of thousands of people are now under the control of ISIS. City after city has been captured by them. Thousands and thousands of young people are joining their cause. Even some of those are Westerners. Why? What is their appeal?
We’ve all witnessed their fierce persecution of Christians. ISIS has been very public about their executions of Westerners or Christians as a fear tactic and warning to the “infidel” world. Such as Jahidi John, a Kuwait-born Londoner who has publicly executed many journalists. Or the 21 Christians in Libya who have had their throats slit as they were kneeling on the shores of the Mediterranean.
What is motivating ISIS? Why are they doing what they’re doing? What is their philosophy? Could it even be that they are motivated by more than a philosophy but a theology!
Many don’t realize but the stated intention of ISIS is to establish something called a Caliphate. A Caliphate is a society based on Islamic law. Islamic mentality is that any other society based on any other government is illegitimate, and that the only righteous gov is a Caliphate. It’s derived from the word Caliph which is the name given to the leader of the Muslim community and who is considered to be the direct successor of Muhammad.
ISIS sees itself as “a key agent in the coming apocalypse”? WHAT??!!?
Yes, it’s true! All ISIS decisions are based on a certain belief system. ISIS has something called the “Prophetic Methodology.” This is a phrase you will see on much of its media, such as their magazines, billboards and coins. ISIS believes that they have a key role to play in establishing a new Messianic kingdom.
This is a large part of the ISIS appeal. Even their black flags seem to be a reference to a saying of Muhammad, their prophet. “If you see the black banners coming from the direction of Khorasan, then go to them, even if you have to crawl, because among them will be Allah’s Caliph the Mahdi.”
What Muhammad was saying is that a group bearing black flags would come from an area called Khorasan, which is an ancient term for the region that we now call Afghanistan. And that you need to do whatever you can to be part of this group because among them will come the Mahdi. We’ll talk about who the Mahdi is in a moment.
ISIS believes that the final battle between good and evil will be fought in a Syrian city called Dabiq. They believe armies of the West led by the Pope of Rome will come down across Europe to Dabiq.
Since ISIS believes that the armies of Rome are infidels and must be slain at any cost to establish the new Messianic kingdom, when the armies of Rome get to Dabiq, they believe that all the forces of ISIS will meet there and fight with them.
ISIS believes that the armies of Rome will appear to have the victory and slay all but 5,000 of ISIS’ forces. Then during battle ISIS will be driven back to Jerusalem, and there Mahdi will appear. Who’s the “Mahdi?” He is the Islamic messiah-redeemer.
When he comes, he will then lead the armies of ISIS to defeat all the Western armies of Rome. Then righteousness will shine throughout all the world, and the glorious kingdom of Islam will rule the entire world.

What does the book of Revelation reveal about Islam and the end of the world? What does Bible prophecy say about ISIS’ involvement in being a key figure in soon bringing the world to the battle of Armageddon? It is an interesting fact to note that, similarly to ISIS’ last stand at Dabiq, the Bible does speak about a great showdown at the very end of the world called “Armageddon.”

Revelation portrays the entire world being brought to one great final test. In Revelation 13:1-10 we see a first beast which is the Antichrist power. In verse 3 it received a deadly wound. But then we see a second beast comes on the scene in verse 11, and it has the ability to cause/force the entire earth to worship the first beast Antichrist power, thus healing the first beast’s deadly wound.
About his second beast the Bible says…
“And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon. And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed.” Revelation 13:11,12
